CITY COUNCIL.

ORAKEI AMALGAMATION. THE AGREEMENT APPROVED. ACQUIRING MOTUIHI ISLAND. The City Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, presiding. The Finance Committee reported the basis of an agreement for the amalgamation of the Orakei road district with the city had been reached. Orakei will remain a special rating area, in which ratepayers will pay all Auckland city rates, except special rates, until half the Government land has been sold. The report was adopted without discussion. The Mayor was authorised to open negotiations with the Government with a view to having Motuihi Island created a public reserve and vested in the council. A scheme for the construction of a motor-parking garage under Fanshawe Street was outlined by Mr. F. W. Brinsden, and was referred to the Works Committee for a report. An intimation that no money was available for the erection of shelters was made by the Tramways Committee in reporting on a request for the provision of a shelter for waiting passengers at the new bus terminus in Commerce Street. The matter will be considered further when money is available. A refund of £BOO, paid by him in connection with the construction of Standen Road, Remuera, was sought by Mr. H. E. Finlay. The city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, said he could see no grounds for reopening the question, which had been dealt with in 1925. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Tenders were accepted as follows: Uniforms for traffic department, Suits, Limited, £4 8s 9d each; caps for traffic department, Marks and Rose, lis 6d each.
