(Received August 31, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. BERLIN, Aug. 30
An explosion, which was heard for miles, occurred on the German oil-tanker Swendy, which was carrying 800 tons of oil from Cologne. The vessel caught fire and was blown up when she was on the Rhine near Strassburg.
The captain, with his wife and child, jumped into the river with their clothes blazing. The captan was drowned, but the others were rescued. They were very seriously burned.
