HEROIC NEW ZEALANDER.
DEATH IN FLYING MISHAP. D.S.C. AT AGE OF SIXTEEN.. News has been received of the death of Lieutenant-Commander H. M. S. Forbes, a gallant New Zealander, who was killed in a flying accident at' Malta last June. Known as "Forbes the Fearless," the commander was, at the time of the famous landing at V Beach, Gallipoli, a midshipman, aged 16, on the battleship Cornwailis. Under heavy fire on the historic April 25, 1915, he assisted in securing the lighters which formed the pier between the River Clyde and the shore. In 1915 Lieutenant-Commander Forbete volunteered for the Fleet air arm, qualifying as a pilot over a year ago. For his gallantry at Gallipoli he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, being probably the youngest man to attain that honour. Lieutenant-Commander Forbes' mother is Mrs. A. E. Farrington, wife of ViceAdmiral Farrington, C.M.G., who now resides at Malta. Mrs. Farrington, who was born i.u Parnell, Auckland, is the daughter of the late Colonel Rookes, who settled in New Zealand after he retired from the Army. He served with distinction in the Maori Mar.
