ENGLISH COUNTY CRICKET. GOOD BOWLING BY BOWLEY. (Received August 21, 6.10 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONQON, Aug. 20. Rain again interfered considerably with play in the county cricket matches and only three matches lasted long enoogh to be counted in the championship. Playing against Somersetshire Kent, in the first innings, made 345 (Hardinge 154, Ashdown 112) and in the second, 243 for two wickets, declared (Hardinge 82 not out, J. Bryan 128). Somersetshire, in the first innings, made 214 (Earle 51, Freeman five for 99) and in the second, 55 (Wright six for 29). Kent won by 319 runs. In Kent's second innings Hardinge and Bryan put on 219 runs for the first wicket in two hours. Bryan drove powerfully and placed to leg brilliantly. He hit five sixes and 11 fours. Earle, in his 51, hit five sixes. For Sussex against Glamorganshire Bowley took six wickets for 69. For Glamorganshire Mercer took four for 41 and Clay four for 21. Glamorganshire won. For Notts against Northants S. Staples took five for 56. For Northants Jupp took five for 62. Notts won. For Worcestershire against Middlesex Root took five for 69 and Jewell four for 20. The match was not counted in the championship. WRESTLING IN MELBOURNE. THYE DEFEATS CLAPHAM. (Received August 21, 6.10 p.m.) A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Aug. 21. At the Melbourne Stadium last evening in a contest for the world's light heavy-weight wrestling championship Ted Thye defeated Sam Clapham by one fall to none, in 10 rounds. CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS. HYDE WINS VICTORIAN TITLE. (Received August 21, 6.10 p.m.) A/ and N.Z. SYDNEY. Aug. 21. The 10-miles' amateur cross-country championship of New South Wales yesterday resulted as follows:—A. Gainsford, 1; M. Mackenzie, 2; R. Bateman, 3. Time, 51m 495. The time indicates that the distance was apparently 1000 yards short of 10 miles. At Melbourne the five-miles* - amateur cross-country running championship of Victoria resulted: —George Hyde, 1; E. Moore, 2; C. Willis, 3. Time, 27m 25£s. BOXING MATCH IN SYDNEY. PAYNE KNOCKS OUT SQUIRES. (Received August 21, 6.10 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Aug. 21. At the Sydney Stadium last evening " Tiger " Payne knocked out Johnny Squires, the heavy-weight champion of South Africa, in the first round. Payne fought wildly and missed frequently, but shortly before the end of the round ho connected with a'heavy right swing to the jaw and knocked out Squires. JAPANESE RTJGBY PLAYERS. DEFEAT BY NEW SOUTH WALES. (Received August,2l, 6.10 p.m.) A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Aug. 21. The Japanese Rugby Union team from Waseda University played its first match in New South Wales yesterday against a State team. New South Wales won by 31 points to 6.
