HOLDER OF ANCIENT TITLE. (Received August 16, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON. Aug. 15. The death has occurred of the 13th Earl of Winchilsea, aged 75. The Earl of Winchilsea was born in 1852. He was educated at Eton and .Oxford, and married a daughter of the late Admiral Codrington. His son, Viscount Maidstone, who was born in 1885, and served through the war, succeeds to the earldom and the late peer s other titles. The earldom has descended from the first countess who was created countess in 1628 hy Charles I. with special remainder to her children. Aug. 15. The death of Mr. Elbert H. Gary, the chairman of the United States Steel Corporation, which occurred to-day, has removed one of the most picturesque figures in the history of American finance. Mr. Gary, who was 80 years old. had been ill for a long time, but details of his condition were kept from the public, through fear of its effect upon the markets.

The announcement of his death caused little disturbance, however, and an upward trend followed the news, which close observers regard as a healthy indication regarding the condition of the present financial structure of the corporation. There are also many indications of the plans which have been laid by financial interests to support the market systematically, and so to prevent a break. Mr. Gary was first a farm labourer in Illinois, and then he became in turn a lawyer, a Judge and a financier.

Mr. Elbert Henry Gary was born on a farm in Illinois He studied at Chicago University and became a lawyer and practised in Chicago for 25 years, and was a countv Judge for a short time. Then ho retired to assist in the formation of the Federal Steel Corporation, of which he was president, and he was prominent in the formation of the Great Lnited States Steel Corporation, <if which he was chairman and chief executive officer in general ch<n'g6 of its multitudinous affciirs.
