THE KAWHIA ROAD.

Sir, —" Farmer " has written another letter upon the subject of the Kawhia Road. This letter contains such a simple but heart-reading account of the hardships that the settlers of that district endure for want of a metalled road that I wondered if some of the exceedingly prac-. tica'l organisations that have dealt with the hardships of our Auckland unemployed might not feel moved to deal with the desperate need of these Auckland settlers. But. however much to be desired the result of stich practical good will might be, is it a right and just thing that the Government should cod tinue to neglect such an obvious duty as that of meeting the Kawhia settlers over this matter of metalling the remaining six miles of their road 7 The farmers have subscribed £4O toward the making of the road, and have asked the Government for a subsidy, but can recjive no satisfaction whatever At first the request was overlooked because " there were so many more important demands to attend to first." Now it is met by their offering to divert tho money subscribed to a piece of road other than the one the settlers subscribed for. New Zealand has suffered a great deal since the vrar from the steady movement of farmers described as " walking off tho land." Here wo have the most courageous and enduring of our countrymen remaining on their farms to fight an uphill battle against after-war conditions and fluctuating prices, yet, year after year, their struggle is made almost, unendurable by the fact that the Government ignores their appeal to have their road made passable. will not the Minister of Public Works look into th& matter, so that the work can be undertaken as soon as the fine weather begins ? A Visixob xo Kawhia.
