REVISED TRAM FARES.
Sir,—Now the City Council are out to put the trams on a proper paying basis I think they should go " the whole hog " and banish all concessions. A penny a section to everybody at any time should have very few opponents. " In England whenever a railway route was granted by Government, it was compulsory to run what was called a Parliamentary train once a day at Id per mile. This still holds good. It seems Mr. Bloodworth objects to what he calls increased fares as a burden to the workers. The fares will not be increased to anyone, except the users of concession cards, which includes all those who are best able to pay. and who should pay a proper fare—because if those who must use the cars do not pay a fare such as is necessary to keep the undertaking solvent only one thing can happen. With regard to the worker, whoever the term applies to. I never noticed any worker doing more for the handsome wages he now enjoys than he considers the wages are worth. In fact, since the war he seems to get double pay for half as much work as he used to do before it. Then, again, it is nobody's business how he chooses to waste his wages at races, etc., so why need he worry about a few pence a week extra for tram fares when one drink a week less or one race day a month less would put things right. I hope the council will stiffen their backbone and stand out for the penny all round for everybody, workers included. What they are fighting for concerns a good many tramway workers, as well as the solvency of the city tramways, which is all important, and I wish them well in the fight, and pood luck to them. Third Sectioxer.
