DELAY TO STEAMER.
DISPUTE ON WAIKOUAITI. SHIP SAILS FIVE HOURS LATE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Friday. Owing to a dispute with the firemen, the Union Steam Ship Company's intercolonial steamer Waikou.iiti did not sail until 4 p.m. to day. The vessel was to have sailod from Lyttelton at 11 a.m. for Sydney and Newcastle, but the stoko hold hands refused to take the vessel to sea until the supply of bunker coal was replenished. Tho men maintained that unless the bunkers were kept reasonably full the work of stoking the vessel became very laborious. A settlement was reached by the company agreeing to put more coal in the bunkers. About six months ago tho Waikouaiti was held up at Wellington for some time, as the company declined to accede to the demands of the stokehold crew for two or three e.\Jra trimmers. Eventually things were adjusted by the company undertaking to keep the coal "running," that is, in such a convenient position as to entail a minimum amount of wheeling.
