RAILWAYS APPOINTMENT.

The North Island Railway Board of Appeal sat in Wellington yesterday to hear the appeal of F. H. Murphy, locomotive foreman, Thorndon, against his supersession by G. F„ Martin, for the position of locomotive inspector for the North Island. The board comprised Messrs. J. G. L. Hewitt, chairman, V. R. J. Stanley, repiesenting "Division L of the service, and RCarroll, representing Division IL Sir. A. Urquhart represented the Railway Department, and Mr. R. Hampton, general secretary of the Railway Officers Institute, represented the appellant. Evidence on behalf of the department was given by J. F. Mackley, locomotive engineer, and A. Whisker, coal sl "P er * visor. Evidence on behalf of appelant was given by E. E. Gillon, retired officer, formerly chief mechanical engineer, and J. McNeelv, retired officer, formerly locomotive inspector. After the advocates had addressed tna board the chairman said. the decision of the board would be forwarded to the Minister in due course.
