DESTRUCTIVE STORM.
WESTPORT DISTRICT SWEPT. SCHOOL HOUSE DEMOLISHED. COLLAPSE OF RAILWAY SHEDS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.J WESTPORT. Thursday. Westport was visited by a severe electrical disturbance early this morning. The centre of the storm appeared to be over the town. The storm started at 2 a.m. with ominous thunder, and at 2.45 a.m. a vivid flash of lightning followed. .immediately a deafening roar shook the whole town, especially the portion adjacent to the waterfront. The thunder lasted for two hours with hardly a break and was accompanied by torrential rain and howling wind. Telephone lines were torn down. Cape Foulwind was visited by a cyclone at 2.45 and in a few minutes the schoolhouse was completely demolished, only the piles remaining. The public hall and hotel were badly damaged, the front being blown away. The railway sheds also collapsed, burying an engine. Heavy pieces of timber were hurled about like arrows, sticking fast in the ground and in buildings. Nobody was hurt. It is said the storm was the worst experienced here for many years.
