MINING AT KAWARAU.
DAM TO CLOSE TO-DAY. LOWER LEVEL OF WATER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] DUNEDIN. Tuesday. The announcement that the Kawarau dam will be definitely closed at 9 a.m. to morrow has appreciably renewed interest in the scheme, which is now being fully discussed. Last night's frost was the most severe of the season. This, with a deposit of snow, which has frozen the mountain streams, has caused the river to fall even more rapidly than a week ago, and there was a further fall of a few inches during the last 24 hours. Although the marks are not absolutely definite, tho general opinion is that the level at Cromwell to-day is from 15in to 18in. lower than at last year's closing The weather is cold and settled and the river sure to continue to fall. Holders of claims in the gorge can look for a lower level than last year, followed by a daily drop of a few inches.
