CONDUCT OF STUDENTS.

SOME RECENT INCIDENTS. " GOOD DEAL OF COMMENT." EDUCATION MINISTER'S VIEW. STRICTER DISCIPLINE URGED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON. Thursday. Improper conduct by univeijsity students at capping and other ceremonies has come under the notice of the according to a letter from tha Minister of Education, Hon. R. A. Weight, received at this "evening's meeting of the Victoria College Council. The Minister wrote: —"Rarent examples of disorder among {university 1 students at public functions and in public places have aroused a good deatl of comment. It seems to be felt in same quarters that the Government shou id take action in the matter. My own opinion is, however, that ample disciplinary power is already vested in the professorial board of each university college to bring the students under proper conttrol, although a request from the college council that the professorial board should exercise its powers with greater strictness might not be out of place." Sir. H. A. Parkinson: "Would it not be proper to ask to what incideut he is referring V Mr. A. Fair, K.C.: "I think it a> fairly well known." Professor Florance said he hail not heard anything about the matter officially. The chairman, Mr. R. McCallum,: "We j do not need to hear of these thinjgs officially. We know what happened in Auckland." A Member: "Were our students involved ?" The Chairman: "No." Mr. McCallum said there had btsen incidents outside New Zealand —a acandal at Melbourne, for instance. On Professor Hunter's motion tha letter was referred to the professorial bo;Jtrd for a report. Mr. Fair said he had no doubt that when the report was obtained it would be found that the students of Victoria College had been very well behawcxJ.
