TAKAPUNA AFFAIRS.

RATES FOR CURRENT YEAR. MILFORD DRAINAGE PROBLEM. The financial position of Takapuna will, within the next few weeks, be placed before the ratepayers by the Mayor and councillors at public meetings. The Mayor,. Mr. J. W. Williamson, stated at a special meeting of the council on Wednesday evening that it would probably be necessary to strike a rate on the basis of £1 17s 6d per £IOO of capital value. It was just possible this figure might be reduced by Is when the council had received advice from the borough solicitor as to one of the items in the accounts. The Finance and Legal Committee was to go carefully into the question of amalgamation of some of the duties of the staff, and the general affico management, with a view to retrenchment. * The expenditure out of the sewea-ag# and road loans necessitated providing £22,959 for interest and sinking fund, as compared with £15,937 for last financial year, and also an increase of nearly £IOO to meet the Hospital Board levy. The council decided that it could not make any contribution to the maintenance of the O'Neill's Point cemettery, which is controlled by the Devonport County Council, although within the Takapuna boundaries. The question of the form to be taken by the sewage storage culvert on Milford Beach was also considered, but no decision was arrived at. Directions were given to tho borough engineer to prepare alternative plans for a culvert in Audrey Road, which runs parallel to the beach, on tho inner side of the outward, block.
