MATERNITY WARD WANTED.
NEEDS OF ROTORUA. WAIKATO BOARD'S SUPPORT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Thursday. Resolutions urging the establishment of a maternity ward at tho King George V. Hospital at Rotorua, passed by the Rotorua Borough and County Councils and the Rotorua Women's Club, were received at a meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board to-day. In moving that the board support the proposal and recommend it to the favourable consideration of the Minister of Health. Kir. W. Hill said when at Rotorua he had pointed out that in tho event of tho board undertaking the provision of a. maternity ward at Rotorua, substantial assistance from tho district could bo expected. Some time ago Dr. Valintino had stated that existing facilities at King George V. Hospital could be adapted, at an outlay • of from £3CO to £4OO. Tho Minister of Health had now stated that it was a matter entirely for tho beard to take up. Rotorua was the centre of a large tract of country right hack to Taupo, and its claims for maternity provision were substantial. If the resolution before the board were forwarded to the Minister, he would notify the board of his requirements. and ■ the board would then be in a position to consider definite proposals. Mr. J. Price, Matarnata, seconded the motion, and.said tho Matarnata maternity hospital was fully taxed, without having to serve a still wider area. * The chairman said that while he recognised the general necessity for providing adequate provision for maternity cases he ■was opposed to giving Rotorua a matermty ward while the. base hospital at Hamilton was si ill without such provision. 1 3-ho resolution was carried.
