The man Israel Melcher, who was charged with attempting to blackmail Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer and the prospective Conservative candidate for Wednesbury, pleaded guilty and waa sentenced to imprisonment for nine months. Melcher was recommended to mercy by Mr. Rubin. The defence acknowledged Mr. Rabin's magnanimity, and counsel 'laid stress on the fact that his honour and character were never assailed by MeWietv
