OUTBREAKS OF FIRE.
A QUEEN STREET ALARM. FUSING OF ELECTRIC WIRES. MINOR DAMAGE CAUSED. The presence of two fire engines in Queen Street about half-past seven on Saturday evening caused some excitement. Several hundred people assembled in front of Avery's millinery store in Short's Buildings, opposito His Majesty's Arcade, and watched the action of two firemen , who had entered the premises by forcing the door and who could be seen through the window. The outbreak was due to the fusing of the electric .wires in an elaborate display 'apparatus worked by an elecfoic motor. By the time the firemen arrived the motor, which was valued at £25, had been burned out and some of the wax figures on a revolving sign were damaged. Some of the stock of millinery near the wires tvas slightly singed. Both the stock and fittings suffered minor damage. The door, which was forced by the firemen, was also slightly damaged. The proprietor left tho premises at closing time on Saturday and was unaware of the mishap until late in tho evening. SEQUEL TO A BURGLARY. BUILDING WILFULLY IGNITED. [BY telegraph.— phess association.] BUNEDIN. Saturday. A call was received shortly before six o'clock this morning to Messrs. Murray Roberts and Company's buildings in Liverpool Street, where three bales of wool and several sacks of wheat were on fire, Tho brigade extinguished the blaze and returned to headquarters, but at 7.30 a.m. another call was received to the same building, where fire had broken out in a different part of the stores, near tho liquor fyond. After tho outbreak had been quelled it was discovered that tho building had been set on fire in four places, and that burglars had made a hole in tho 9in. wall and had gained admittance to the bond. Tho intruders also riped a largo number of sacks containing corn, thus, doing considerable damage. FLAMES IN A STABLE. THREE HORSES DESTROYED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Saturday. A fire broke out yesterday afternoon in Hunt, Cottrell's stables in Tinakori Road, which contained 25 horses, All were got out alive, but seven were badly burned and three had to be destroyed. Hie other four will need tho attention of a veterinary surgeon. The building was badly damaged. SMALL DWELLING BURNED. RESULT OF BOILING FAT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ROTOR UA, Saturday. A firo occurred in Clayton Road last evening when a five-roomed house and furniture was practically destroyed. The family at the time were about to start milking and tverci at the milking shed. Some fat had been left to render down ind ifc boiled over and burst into flames. \ member of the family, on returning to ho house, found the kitchen well ablaze. There being no water available except "hat in the tanks it was impossible to save the building.
