CARRIED OUT BY CURRENT. RESCUERS IN DIFFICULTIES. EXCITEMENT AT A PICNIC. [by telegraph.—oavn correspondent. ] WHANGAREI. Sunday. Several young residents of Kauri had a narrow escape from drowning early yesterday afternoon. About 100 people wei-e attending the picnic of the Kauri School at Ruakaka beach and many were bathing in the river. Two girls, Winnie McMillan, aged 14, and Naomi Graham, aged 15, and several others went to the ocean beach, which is very dangerous on account of the strong tide, and the girls were soon carried out to deep water. Their plight was seen by four young men, J. Mclnnis, W. McLeod, H. Coles and E, Codlin, who went to their assistance, but soon were in difficulties them selves. Another young man, W. Russell, secured a rope and using it as a life-line, brought Codlin and Miss McMillan to the shore. A boat was secured from the river and dragged to the beach and the others were then rescued. Miss Graham was fully a quarter of a mile from the shore when rescued, but had the presence of mind to float.. The six people had been in the water for over an hour, but fortunately the sea was calm
