EXCURSION BY TRAIN.
VISIT TO WAITOMO CAVES. TOTAL OF 154 TRAVELLERS. The first excursion train from Auckland to Waitomo to bo run by the Railways Department this year was fairly well patronised when it left Auckland at 8.50 yesterday morning. Althongh accommodation was provided for 222 passengers only 188 travelled, 34 being passengers to Frankton Junction. The last excursion was run on December 12, when 120 people made the trip, and the first train left a fortnight previously with 250 passengers. The excursion has only been made as an experiment and as such it lias barely proved profitable to the department. It is stated that yesterday's excursion will be the last one this year. Those who journeyed to the caves yesterday returned satisfied with the arrangements made for their comfort. The carriages placed on the train are similar to those used for the Main Trunk expresses. An efficient motor-bus service is maintained between Ilangatiki and Waitomo, and the catering at the hostel was stated to be most satisfactory. The ro turn train left Hangatiki at 6.15, arriving in Auckland shortly after 10 o'clock.
