TROTTING.

OTAIIUHU CLUB'S MEETING. SEA PEARL WINS THE CUP. f. AN EXCITING FINISH. respect effects surprise. The Otahuhu Trotting Club opened it a summer meeting at Alexandra Park on Saturday and, with weather conditions in keeping with the season, racegoers were present jjl strong force at the Epsom giound to assist at the gathering, which passed on most pleasantly. The arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. R. L. Absolum, resulted most satisfactorily and with prompt iime observed the proceedings were never allowed to drag. The flags on the grandstands were flying at half-mast owing to ihe death of Mrs. D. 11. McKenzie, mother of Mr. H. R. McKenzie, and o£ Mr. Alfred Harris, The judicial committee was summoned during the afternoon. Incidents in the contest for . the Mount Albert Handicap fomied the subject of. inquiry. G. Caddy, driver oi Some Jazz, was suspended for tbiee months for careless driving and for interfering with Billy Whizz and Amberite. The driving o£ Tiger Salve in the same race also formed the subject oi inquiry, but no further action was taken. M. Holmes, the driver of Locanda Mac in the Olahuliu Cup, was summoned to explain his handling of that horse. After sitting for some time the committee adjourned tne inquiry until Wednesday. The chief etipendiaiy steward. Mr. T. H. Davey. and Mr. A. G. were both present. The totaliautor investments amounted to !£46.151, compared with £50,164 10s on the corresponding day last year, which represents a decrease of 4MtU3 IDs. " in a field of '23 produced to contest the Trial Handicap. l-'eiroieuse and bean irubais were tne pair singled out lor most atientiou unci tiiuy iouyiit out the iiiiisii, but in the reverse order to which their names figure above, llad Petroleuse commenced properly, she might havo reversed places with the winner. , . , Another extensive held was found on nand to contest the Tamaki Handicap, 29 going to the post. The bracketed pair, Sahio and Roy Logan, was the popular selection, with another bracketed pair in the shape of Taipare and Horizon next m demand. Taipare, who was always going well, worked his way into the lead three furlongs from home, and he won his race in good style. In a field of a dozen harnessed to contest the Mount Albert Handicap, Maggie Pronto was selected for favourite, with Sebisca next in demand. The history oi the l-ace so far as the leading position is concerned is easily described, for Tony Victor was always in front, and he lasted long enough to win by a neck from Sister Beatrice, whose finishing offort was invested with much grit. Sea Pearl's Victory. The succeeding event was the Otahuhu Cup, and when tho numbers went up it was found that of the 13 coloured on the card 11 were to go to the post. . Oonclilfe, who iigured with the limit division, bad been bo extensively discussed that it was a fairly popular prediction he would rule favourite, but when speculation closed it was found that Cardinal Ldgan was in the post of honour.' It was. howver, only by a limited amount. Sea Pearl and Locanda Mac were the two others to receive marked attention. The contest that eventuated was brimful of interest throughout. When the last two furlongs came to be entered upon Locanda Mao and Cardinal Logan were found waging a stiff battle for supremacy, with Sea Pearl and Conclifie a couple of lengths away. The race up the straight saw Sea Pearl come along in splendid stylo and ' the chestnut mare joining issue with the leaders, excitement was roused to a liigh pitch. Sea Pearl would not be denied and she gained the verdict by a head from Locanda Mac, and as tho latter was only separated by a similar distance from Cardinal Logan it was in every respect a great race. The victory of Sea Pearl was very popular, and tho chestnut mare and her driver, R. Berry, received an ovation on coming back to . the enclosure. After the race the handsomo gold cup which formed tho trophy was presented by Mr. G. Baildon to the owner of tlio winner, Mt. G-. McMillan, amid enthusiasm. A gold-mounted whip was also presented to the, driver, R. Berry. In a field of a dozen for the President's Handicap Betty Moko was the popular fancy, with Ingle Bingen and Ngatira next ' in demand. The winner, however, turned lip in Poter Swift. Betty Moko looked like winning at' the head of tho straight, where nhe was in the lead, but tho final stage saw her tire and Peter Swift, who finished well, beat Pete Peter by three-quarters of a length. Favourites Go Down. Tho Papakura Handicap brought out a 'dozen contestants. Luvan was thn one selected for most attention, with Direct Moniing nnd Direct AVood most fancied of the others. The favourite division, however, suSered a complote rout. When tho final stage came to bo entered upon Bingen Starr and Van Rich were in the lead, but Respect, who had lost his position at the back by breaking, could be discerned making up his ground in bold style. Respect maintained a strong effort, and amid much excitement, he caught Bingen Starr two strides from the post, and won by a head. Respect was only bought last month by Mr. A. R. Saunders, 80 that he luvs already proved a lucky purchase. t For tho Myers Handicap Talent and ißessie Logan were popular fancies. The winner, however turned up in Jewel Pointer, who beat the veteran Goldman by three-quarters of a length. An incident in the race led to S. M. Groat, driver of Cute Lad, being cautioned for careless driving, by which Talent suffered interference. The saddle event—the Railway Handicap —-brought out a 'field of 19, and when backers got to work they made the Can- ■ terbury gelding Firpo favourite, a bracketed pair in Reliance and Kingsclere being second in demand. Neither of the fancied trio were' in a position to flatter the hopes of their respective admirers, and the Wnikato gelding Liberate, who was ridden by his owner, R. A. McMillan, brought off a mild surpnso. DETAILS OF THE RACING, TRIAL HANDICAP. Of £300; second £6O. third £3O. For trotting horses only. Limit 3.48; 11 miles. 2—SEAN TRUIBHAIS. A. ,T.
