The Postmaster-General;, Si: William Mitchell-Thomson, speaking at Croydon, said:— "Certain Socialist leaders are reported to have said that if Britain is involved in a war in China they v.-ill do their best to prevent British troops from being assembled. "If they do that they will end ap, and very properly too, against a wall with a firing party in front of them. It is just as -well they should know that right from the start." DEFENCE OF SHANGHAI. FURTHER REINFORCEMENTS. TWO PUNJABI BATTALIONS.. (Received Feb. IS, 11.15 p.m.") A. and N.Z. PEKING. Feb. 16. Britain's Shanghai defence force has been further reinforced by two Punjabi battalions from India.. They arrived at Shanghai last night. Five battalions are now encamped in the international settlement. POLICY OF JAPAN. PROTECTIVE STEPS ONLY, FORCE TO BE RESISTED. A. and N.Z. TOKIO, Feb. 15. The Japanese Foreign Minister, Baron Shidehara, states that Japan's policy of non-interference in China never meant that she would neglect the necessary protection of her rights and interests in China. Japan would naturally have to reconsider the situation- in the event, of China making an attempt to recover the foreign settlements by force of aims.
