FIGHT WITH BIG FISH.
TWO AT ONE TIME. BATTLE NEAR CAPE BRETT. YOUNG MEN'S ADVENTURE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WHANGAREI, Wednesday. One at a time is good fishing, especially when a 2551b. swordfish is at the loose end of the line, but two young men at Cape Brett yesterday nearly had too much of a good thing when they hooked two large fish simultaneously, landing them after a thrilling ninety-minutes' battle. The fishermen, Messrs. F. Hoffman and J. O'Keill, were among a party fishing from the private launch Rosyth 11. They put off in an lift, dinghy to try their luck. A big swell was running and the little boat was soon some four miles to sea. Simultaneously two swordfish swallowed the live bait. As they had no harpoon 011 board and the sea was getting rougher every minute the young men quickly realised their danger. Suddenly one of the swordfish was seen to be making straight for the boat. When within two feet it broached, but fortunately, instead of jumping at the dinghy, it dived and disappeared under the bow. The young men at once allowed their lines to run out while they put on their harness and then ensued the fight for supremacy. Four miles out to sea in a small dinghy drifting further out all the time these youths fought the great fighters of the deep, and after an hour and ahalf of leaping and diving the swordfish were pulled alongside. The fish weighed 2571b. and 2551b. respectively. ANGLERS AT RUSSELL. SIR TOM BRIDGES ARRIVES. [ls X TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] RUSSELL. Wednesday.
