ROADING CONDITIONS.
THE RANGIRIRI DEVIATION.
PORTIONS TO BE TAR-SEALED
The methods of maintenance employed on the Rangiriri deviation were discussed by the council of the' Auckland Automobile Association last evening. Three members said the loose metal afforded a bad surface. It was conducive to skidding and several cars had slipped over the banks during the Christmas holidays. Mr. G. Seming said tfce road was not built for speed and there was a tendency for motorists to drive too fast on it.
Mr. M. H. Wynyard, the motorists' representative on the Main Highways Board, said a superfluity of metal "had been laid on the deviation. The board would shortly undertake the tar-sealing of several short portions of the road. .The deplorable condition of deviations during the concreting of portions of the Great South Road was also criticised. Mr. Wvnyard said the local bodies had endeavoured to escape blame by suggesting the Main Highways Board had made no provision for the maintenance of deviations. This was incorrect as the beard had added £225 a mile to its assessed construction subsidy to permit the maintenance of detours. A member said it was doubtful whether the local bodies had expended even £25 a mile on the crude attempts made io provide a thoroughfare. , It was decided to' 'urge the Minister of Public Works to accelerate metalling 'ors the East- Coast Road at Siiverdale"in order to avoid, a repetition of the conditions which spoilt so many motor tours .at Christmas.
