DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
HOUSE AT WAIMAIJKU. MOTHER RESCUES CHILDREN. BUILDING QUICKLY BURNED. [By TELEGRAPH.-—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAIMAUKU, Monday. The six-roomed dwelling of Mr, Michael Martin at Waimauku was destroyed by fire at about six o'clock this morning. Mr. Martin was absent at the time and the outbreak was noticed by Mrs. Martin, who was outside the house. She rushed inside and took out her four children, the youngest of whom is a baby. The fire, which is thought to have started in the kitchen, spread quickly to all parts of the house. Nothing could be done to extinguish the flames and tho building was soon razed to .the ground. All that was saved was an armful of clothes and a sewing machine. The house was insured for £BOO and the furniture for £IOO. UNOCCUPIED DWELLING RAZED. NO WATER AVAILABLE. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CAMBRIDGE, Monday. A six-roomed wooden dwelling and a detached wash-house in Burns Street, Leamington, were destroyed by fire about 4 o'clock yesterday, morning. The house, which was unoccupied, was owned by Mr. C. V. Qarmonsway, of Cambridge, The building was in flames when the fire w&s discovered and as. there was no water supply the neighbours could only watch the house burn. A serious fire occurred at Tangowahine : at about two o'clock yesterday morning . when Mr. P. J. McMahon's motor garage and two cars were destroyed. The origin »of the. outbreak is a mystery, . Mr. McMahon is a heavy loser. GRASS FIRE IN CAMP. TERRITORIALS QUELL FLAMES. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH,' Monday. An outbreak of fire on the parade ground at the Burnham military camp yesterday morning caused a stir among the troops. The fire was lighted to burn some grass but it got out of control for a while. -The whole camp was called out to fight the flames, which spread rapidly because of the dryness of tl\e grass. One tent was burned before the blaze was extinguished. \ DAMAGE TO A DWELLING. MOUNT EDEN OUTBREAK. i' • • • : , y'-i'-, ■' . •>. An outbreak of fire occurred about five o'clock yesterday morning in a sixroomed house at 233, Mount Eden Road, owned and occupied by Mr. P. G. Evans, Tho Mount Eden Fire Brigade was summoned by telophone, and suppressed the flames after the kitchen, drawing room and bathroom had been gutted. ■ The fire, which apparently originated in in the vicinity of the gas stove in the kitchen, had a good hold when discovered by the occupants .of the house, and the rooms were then filled with smoke. The building -was insured for £BOO with the Alliance Insurance Company, and the furniture for £4OO in the South British Office.
