PERJURY ALLEGED.
CHARGES AGAINST CQNSTAHLE SEQUEL TO CIVIL ACTION, [Bit TELEGEAPH.—'JWM COETIBSI'ONDENT. ] DUNEDJN, Friday. After several adjournments, charges of jerjury against Constable George Macartney were proceeded with in the Police Court to-day. This was a sequel to the action in the Supreme Court in November last, when John William Loekett was awarded substantial damage® against the constable for assault and false arrest. Macartney has been in the police force for 28 years. Accused was represented by Mr. Han lon, and the Crown solicitor, Mr. F. B. Adams, conducted the prosecution. The charges were that Macartney committed perjury by swearing that Loclaii was drunk, and that he did not strike Loekett on the night of the arrest. "Mr. Adams, after outlining the two charges, said that in view of the verdict of the jury in the case in which Loekett was awarded damage} against the constable, the police considered it to he their duty to proceed against Macartney for perjury. The -evidence would he the same as given in the Supreme Court, except that Mr. Cave, the registrar of the Supreme Court, would be called. - Ernest White Care, registrar of the Supreme Court at Dune-din, gave evidence to the effect that Macartney had made the statements mentioned in "the charges The hearing has not finished.
