AUSTRALIAN BAND.
ENGAGEMENT IN CANADA. IMPORTANT CONTRACT MADE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] NELSON, Friday. An arrangement of much interest was concluded in Nelson yesterday by Mr. Gladstone Hill, director of the Australian Commonwealth Band, which has just arrived from Canada and is at present touring the North Island. Mr. Hill states that while in Canada he had been approached by the Western Fairs Association (which in conjunction with the management *of the Canadian National Exhibition, at Toronto, was the largest body in the world engaging bands for their fairs and exhibitions c-:h year), with reference to the Australian Band returning to Canada i. :t June and playing for their respective fairs. • Mr. Hill -e'ceived a cable yesterday stating that the band' 3 terms had been accepted, which meant that for the first time in history a band from this part of the world had been chosen in competition with bands from England and the Continent, Mr. Hill states that last summer the Coldstream Guards Band had received special permission from tho King to undertake the same mission as 'e Australians would do next June, and previously the association had brought to Canada such bands rs the Scots Guards and Besses o' the Barn. This year the competition was between the Australian Commonwealth Band and the band of the French Guards Republique, Paris. It is understood the contract price for the return visit of the Australian band is in the region of £IO,OOO.
