SWIMMING GALA.

THE WAITEMATA CLUB. SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES. • The performances of A. D. Adamson, J. Enwright, :A. Raper and E. V. Cunnold were outstanding at tho Waitemata Amateur Swimming Club's second carnival at the Tepid Baths last evening. Adamson swam at his best in returning 58 3-5s for lOOyda, Enwrigat won tho quarter-mile handicap very easily Raper employed an excellent stroke in winning two events and Cunnold showed plenty of stamina in gaining second place in two races. Miss _J. Bell led the way to the rope in the ladies' 220 yds handicap and revealed greatly improved form. L. Fairgray pcavo an exhibition of backstroke swimming. Results, are as follow: — Club Handicap, 100yds.—First heat: A. Raper, 9s, 1; C. Witten, Bs, 2. Time, G6 l-ss. Second heat: A. D. Adamaon, scr., 1; J. Meikle. ss. and E. V. Cunnold. 4s, dead-heat, 2. This special heat was one of the attractions oi the evening. Adamson swam, an excellent race. He caught Enwright first at 66 2-3 yds and came uo from the turn within striking distance of the rest of tho field. With an irresistible burst he forged ahead over the last lap and won by a yard. There was very little between .Enwright and Fairgray,. _it being a stirring race. Time, £8 3-ss. Third heat: A. Maddox, Bs, 1; M. Blackman, 10a, 2. Time. 68s. Final: Raper, 1; Cunnold. 2; Adamson, 3. Raper won by several yards, Cunnold just heading Adamson. who swam hardly as well as in the heat. Time, 65 3-ss. Club Handicap. 440yds.—J. Enwright, 10s, 1; E. V. Cunnold, 12s. 2; C. Welson. 225, 3. After swimming stroke for stroke with Cunnold for a couple of lengths Enwright went away from the other five starters at 266 2-3 yds. Baird, who was on scratch, retired at 133 l-Syds, when be was gliding along with a nice, easy stroke. Bellam also pulled out. The event now developed intp an uninteresting procession, Enwright showing the way. He won by 14yds from Cunnold. The veteran Welson was third. Time. 5m 565. Ladies' Handicap. 220 yards.—Miss Jean Bell, 6s, 1: Miss Edna Champion., 10s, 2: Miss Piri Page, scr. 3. Taking the lead in the second lap, Miss Bell set out to establish an early advantage. At 100 yards Miss Page was almost on level terms with Miss Farquhar, but she was too far away from the leader and the second girl. Miss | Champion, to have .a chance of winning. Miss Bell maintained her position a.nd stalled off a splendid final spurt by Miss Champion to win«a gruelling race by two strokes. Miss Page was close up and ahead . of Misses Farauhar and D. Grant. The time, 3m 2 2-ss, was fairly good. Junior Club Championship, 50 yards (first distance).—P. Brownlee. 1: H. Homiston, and T. Lowe, dead heat, 2. Won all the way. Time, 32 1-53. Novice Handicap, 66 2-3 yards.—First heat: F. Poore, 6s. 1; Raper. scr, 2. Time, 43 3-ss. Second heat: K. Keith, Cs. 1; A. Hardman, 2s, and G-, Lund, ss, dead heat, 2. Time, 47 l-ss. Final: Roper, 1; Poore, 2; Keith, 3. Roper overhauled the other finalists and won without much trouble. Time, 41 3-ss. Boys' Handicap, 50 yards.—First heat: C. Brown, 6s, 1; G-. Keven. 9s, 2. The annual general meeting of the South Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening. Mr. R. English, chairman of the executive, deplored the lack of support from the primary schools. It was decided to hold the executive meetings alternately in Hamilton. Te Awamutu, Morrinsville and Cambridge. The following officers were appointed for the year:—Patron. The Hon. J. A. Young; vice-patron, Mr. H. C. Ross; president. Mr. W. Wilkinson (Cambridge); secretary and treasurer, Mr. E W. Seville (Morrinsville): executive to consist of two delegates from each of the Hamilton. Morrinsville. Cambridge and Te Awamutu clubs; handicapper. Mr. F. A. Empson (Hamilton); auditor, Mr. A. Needham (Morrinsville). The championships were allotted to the clubs as follows! Ladies' 50yds, Hamilton Ladies' Club; 100 yds senior, Old Boys Club: 220 yds senior. Cambridge: 440 yds senior, Morrinsville:; 100 yds intermediate, Te Awamutu: 75yds ladies, Thames; ladies' and men's diving and the 500 yds squadron centre. . , ■ A recommendation that the centre carnival should be held this at Cambridge was forwarded to the incoming executive.
