NORTHCOTE CONCRETING.
PAVING OF THE MAIN ROAD. ACCEPTANCE OF A TENDER,, The tender of J. J. Craig, Ltd., for paving Queen Street, Northcote, from the wharf to the war memorial in Onewa Road, was accepted by the Borough Council last evening. Eight tenders were received as follow: J. J. Craig, Ltd., £22,496 15s 8d; H. Bray and Co., £22,642 7s 8d; S. Trevor Dibble, £22,951 6s; A. B. Brodie, £23,360 19s lOd ; Isherwood and Bellam, £23,560 19a; James Avenill, £23,817 17s 6d, Grinter Bros., £24,159 5s 4d; H. Moody, £25,515 9s Bd. The estimate of the engineer, Mr. A. Grevillo Walker, was £23,737 Is 4d. Acceptance of the lowest tender was conditional on -the engineer being satisfied in respect of the schedule of prices. The work includes a strip of concrete 18ft. wide in the centre of the roadway, with tar-sealed macadam shoulders." The footpaths on both sides are to be asphalted, with concrete kerbing and channelling. Storm-water drains are provided for, and an additional sin. water main is to be laid to improve the water pressure for domestic and fire-fighting purposes. In addition to the contract sum two other items have to be added, namely, engineering fees,' including clerk of works,and £IOOO reserved for tarring the footpaths, which work will be carried out by the council. The total cost of the Queen Street work will thus approximate £24,900, leaving a balance from the £27.400 loan of about £2500 for improvement of Belle Vue Avenue, the cost of raising the loan, and other incidental expenses.
