BUSES TO PUKEKOHE.
NEW SERVICE SANCTIONED. RAILWAYS PROTEST FAILS. The proposal to institute a motor-bus service between the city and Pukekohe was again before the No. 1 Licensing Authority yesterday, when appliction for a licence for a service with two buses was made by W. J. Wheeler. An objection was lodged by the Railway Department to the effect that Pukekohe was already catered for by train service, which was suitable and sufficient for the requirements of the district. The department was prepared to augment the train service to cope with any expansion of traffic;"
, A petition in support of the licence was signed by 727 residents of Pukekohe and the district between Pukekohe and Auckland.
Objection was also made on behalf of the Passenger Transport, Company on the ground that it had pioneered the service and claimed protection. It was urged on behalf of the applicant that the authority could not declare a monopoly on behalf of one company. The purpose of the Act was not to regulate traffic as between two companies, but solely to protect the tramways. , On the recommendation of the special committee set up by the authority the application was granted. There was also an application by the Passenger Transport Company for licences for services between the city and Papatootoe, one ,of these via Manukau Road through Onehunga and Mangere and "another via the Great South Road. An objection from the Railway Department stated that Papatoetoe "was already catered for by a suitable and sufficient train service and that it was prepared to augment the service to meet any increase in traffic.
On the recommendation of the committee the licence was granted.
