RACING.

THE WAIPA MEETING.

PHAOLA WINS THE CUP.

The Waipa Racing Club held its annual race meeting at Te Awamutu on Saturday. The weather was fine and there was a good attendance. The track was in excellent order and the racing full of interest. The Te Awamutu iCup was productive of a splendid contest, victory going to Dr. E. H. Milsom's three-year-old filly Phaola, who scored by a neck from the top-weight, To Kara. Several Auckland Cup candidates were runners in this event, arid of thesa Te Kara, who registered a sterling performance under his big weight, and Star Ranger, who was running on strongly in fourth position, gavei easily the most impressive displays. There were several inquiries in the course of the day. The first was after the Kihikihi Handicap, which was won by Flying Juliet with Tall Timber second. The committee inquired into a happening that took place in the straight between these horses and decided to reverse the placings on the grounds of crossing, while A. Driscoll, rider of Flying Juliet, was suspended for the remainder of the day. The falling of Elmestra in the Waipa Plate was found to be accidental. The running of Scat in the Kihikihi Handicap was also inquired into, but the committee, while not entirely satisfied with the handling of tho horse, decided to take no action. A feature of the racing was the success. of horses trained on the track, no fewer than five locally-trained horses winning, three of these, in Green Bonnet, Pegaway find Atereria being prepared by A Cook. Tho totalisator handled £24,427 10s, compared with £'28,686 last year, a decrease of £4258 10s. Consistent Gold Rep.

Cureaform was a good favourite for the Pirongia Hurdles, with Highflown the second choice and the winner, Gold Rep, at a fair price. Ahirere was the early loader, but Pendennis and Highflown were in front passing the stand, and they led filong the back from Sea Comet and Gold Kep, who had run up from the rear, while Tres Bon, Zanna and Cureaform were also handy. Gold Rep ran to the front nearfog the turn, and, her rider every post a winner, she scored by a length and, a-half from Pendennis, who defeated Highflown by a length. Sea Comet was fourth, followed by West Abbey, Cureaform, who was sore, Greekson and Tres Bon. Highflown made a good showing for a first ran over hurdles, and should bo ■worth keeping in mind. Tall Timber was a pronounced favourite for the Kikiki'hi Handicap. Miss Vera ■was also well backed and Flying Juliet fairly supported. Flying Juliet began first, to be quickly joined by Joy Germ, and the pair led along the back several lengths clear -of Tall Timber aid Miss "Vera, who were clear of Scat. The positions were unchanged crossing the top, but Tall Timber closed up nearing the turn. Once into the straight Tall Timber tried to come through on the rails, -but ■was checked by Flying Juliet and had to be pulled Tip. Flying Juliet then came on to beat Tall Timber by three parts of a length, with the fast-finishing Barometer three lengths away third. Scat, who will improve, was fourth followed by Miss Vera, Joy Germ and Royal Bos. The judicial committee held an inquiry into the crossing that took place in the straight and decided to reverse the placing.?. Tall Timber' being placed first and Flying Juliet second, A. Driscoll, rider of Flying Juliet, was' siispended for the remainder of tho day. Aterirla Wins Nicely. The bracket ibbey Day and Tea Leaf, ■was most in demand for the Waipa Plate, ■with the bracket Ateriria and Rose Swift socond in request. Mervette caught the tapes at the start and a number of horses on the outside were interfered with. Cantab was first out and when they settled down was leading from Hanks, Tea Leaf, Day Guide and Day Rose. Ateriria made a run across the top and lie was handy to Cantab and Tea Leaf rounding the "bend. Ateriria finished well under pressure and won by half a length from Cantab, who beat Tea Leaf by three parts of a length. Wiltshire was a poor fourth, followed by Abbey Day, Ballachulish,; Day Guide and Royal Day. Ateriria, recorded a nice performance, as he was not too well placed early and was lucky to avoid Elmetra, who fell after going about a furlong. " v Phaoia Beats Te Ksia.

The Te Awamutu Cup -was a good betting race, Gala Day being favourite with Te Kara and Delightment also heavily supported. From a fair start Hydo l*ark led past the stand closely followed by Curraghrnore, Gala Day and Delightment. Hyde Park was the leader along the back from Curraghrnore, Desert Glow, Gala Day and, Gold Jacket, while Te Kara was snoring tap, Star Ranger and Lord' Star being in tne rear. The field, with the exception of Lord Star, bunched crossing the top, Hyde Park leading into the straght insfc ahead of Curraghrnore, with Delightment, Phaola, Gold Jacket. Gala Day. and Te Kara in a bunch, the last-named being cn tho rails. The field spread across the course in the straight and a splendid race resulted in Phaola winning by a neck from Te Kara, who defeated Hyde Park by a length. Star Banger, who was on the rails behind the bunch nearing the turn, finished well on the outside in fourth position, and then came Gala Day, Delightment, Curraghrnore and Gold Jacket. Transformer and Quincoma monopolised the 'betting in the Paterangi Walter, Transformer winding up favourite. From a good start Potoanui soon singled out, and when they settled down was showing the way to "Forest Gold, Quincoma, Peter Maxwell and Transformer. There was not much change until the top was reached, ■when Transformer made a forward move. Potoanui and Quincoma just led Transformer at the turn, but over the final furlong Quincoma drew away to win; easily by a length and a-half from Transformer. Potoanui was a smilar distance away third, with Peter Maxwell fourth. Then came Forest Gold, with Day Lass last. For tho Orakau Hack Handicap Pegaway was a slightly better favourite than Branson. Eoa gave a lot of trouble at the post and did not take any part in the race. Branson ran to the front in the first furlong, followed by Winsome Boy, Rina Mangu, Bright Comet and Paddon, Pegaway made a forward move crossing the top, and rounding the bend he was in front with Branson, with Bright Comet, Winsome Boy and Ngarara handy. Once they straightenemd up the leaders drew away, Pegaway gaining the verdict by a head from Branson, with Ngarara, three lengths away third. Winsome Boy was fourth, followed by Bright Comet, Lord Guy ? Awarere and Air Queen. Green Bonnet Surprises.

Aussie, who was one from the outside at the post, was favourite for the Flying Handicap, with the winner, Green Bonnet, at a long price. The inside horses received the best of the start and Green Bonnet, oh the fence, was quickly in charge from Bright Knight, Dan Quin and Nea Kelly. Crossing the top Ned Kelly ran up second and Aussie also , improved his position. Green Bonnet- led into the straignit from Dan Quin and Bright Knight, with Kingfield, Aussie and Ned Kelly handy, the two last-named beirig wide out. Green Bonnet stayed on into the straight to win by half a head from the fast-finishing Archeen, who defeated Bright Knight by a length. Chairman was fourth, followed by Kingfield, Aussie and Dan Quin. The Ohaupo Handicap was a good betting race, with Tall Timber about a £l4O better favourite than Miss Egypt. From an even start Miss Egypt soon took charge •with New Moon, Tall Timber, Barometer ,P Guard well up. Crossing the top Eh limi and Bright Day moved up, but Miss Egypt still led at the turn, where New Moon, Bright Day, Tall Timber and . Barometer were all handy. Miss Egypt jheld her own in the straight to win "by three-parts of a length from New Moon, Tvho defeated Tall Timber by half a length. 'Barometer was fourth, and then bright. CANTERBURY JOTTINGS.

TRAINING AT RICCARTON. [by telegraph, —own correspondent. ] CHKISTCHTJRCH, Saturday. There has been a decided change for the batter in the weather during the past week, and the warm days have been greatly apureciated. The tracks at Riccarton are in the best of order at present, but the week's training operations hav.e not provided a .great deal of excitement owing to the absence of a big contingent of local horses at the South Canterbury meeting. Count Cavour was given a rest after the New Zealand Cup meeting, but he is in active commission again. He has had three smart gallops over a mile, and though beaten by Battlement in the first, he went iu very pleasing style in the other two. The Solferino gelding, looks in the best of health, and he should be at the top of his form for his Auckland engagements. So far he has not galloped the reverse' way, but he is well accustomed to racing that way. Battlement's work during the past week has been patchy. After beating Count Cavour over a mile when in receipt of some weight, he took him on again a few days later, and was very badly beaten. They were both carrying light-weights on this occasion, so it was not to be expected that the, three-year-old would win. but his effort warf disappointing. _ Ho was tried out in the Teschemaker Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting on Friday, and raced badly. Tt was his first run in public since he returned from Sydney, so he need not be condemned for his failure, but he will' need to dof a lot' better to win in the beat company. R. J. Mason has Haze and the two-year-olds Eulalie and Agrion moving along nicely in their < work. They look a very useful team. for Auckland, where they only require average luck to pay their way. Promising Footfall. Footfall is getting through a solid preparation for his Auckland engagements. Ho has had a couple of good gallops over a mile and a-h'alf, and in each of these he had gone very attractively. He is a very ftt horse, and though he is an. unknown nuantity at two miles, I will be surprised if he fails to earn some money at, Ellerslie. The three-year-old Paperch&so is also in the best of order. She won nicely to-day at South Canterbury meeting. Judging ■from the manner in which ehe finished in her races she may be seen to advantage at khe Auckland meetings over seven furlongs or a mile. The hurdler has engagements at the Auckland meeting, but it is not certain .that he will make the trip. A more likely arrangement is that he will accompany Frivolous and King" Abbey on the OtagofWthland circuit. Riccarton stables will be strongly represented during the approaching holidays at the Dunedin Jockey Club'B meeting. They will then be divided, some of them doing the Wyndham and Southland fixtures, while others will do Waikouaiti on New Year's Day. J. Boyd has Precious and Nincompoop engaged at the Manawatu and Marton meetings. He is definitely booked for this trip, but I doubt if he will take Nincompoop, who does not look a good prospect. Precious, on the other hand, is likely to win more races for her new owner. Rapier is engaged during the holidays in the North and South. The original intention was to do Manawatu and Marton, but his connections also nominated him for the Dunedin and Southland circuit.' It is now nettled that he will go North with Chickwheat as a mate, and J. Beale as his rider. Rapier's chances of winning a big race in the North are first-class. Fresco is a local horse whose holiday programme is undecided. F. Christmas had tb» Manftwatf Marton meetings in mind, but he has experienced a difficulty in securing a. rider. An a result I expect to find him racing at the Dunedin and Southland fixtures with reasonable prospects of paying his way. Centrepiece is going on'well in his work and he will be a hard horse to beat in any race ho contests at the Dunedin meeting. Countersign is in good fettle at present and she will be worth following at Southern holiday fixtures. Glehtruin's Next Race. Glentruin has not done much fast work sin6e she returned from Feilding. She may go North again for the Manawatu. meeting, where it is hoped she will show better form in the Palmerston North Stakes. ( Sunny Loch has been tilrned out, and it is doubtful if he will be trained again. He went lame recently, and J. McCombe does not care to risk the complete breakdown of his favourite. Sayonara fell heavily while schooling over hurdles about a week. ago. He has been in a bad way since, and it looks as if he would require a long spell. Tam Glen is the latest recruit to the hurdle brigade at Riccarton. He was exercised in the jumping ring a few days ago, but did not take kindly to his task. The two-year-old Satrap (by Paladin from Persian Lilac),, has resumed work after spelling for a couple of months. He is a well-grown youngster, likely to be a good sort next season. T. H. Gillett has taken Charlatan in hand again, and will get him ready for another jumping campaign in. the winter. He looks big and well after being oS the scene since A.UgU3t. Peho has been sold to a patron of J, W. Jennings' stable, and she will be raced on the west coast during the holidays. Mr. J. F. Buchanan has lost the imported mars Per Arnia (by Picton), who died suddenly a few days ago. Her two-months-old Paladin colt is being reared by hand. South Canterbury Races. In the decision of the Teschemaker Handicap at Timaru Rapier put in a great run in the straight and at every stride was overhauling Front Rank, who had taken the lead over a furlong from home. Beale considered he had headed Front Rank about 20yds. from the post and he dropped his hands, with the result that Front Rank beat him by a neck. Beale had to go before the stewards to explain his action at the finish, and he was cautioned for a gross error of judgment Rapier certainly appeared to be unlucky with his rider sitting still over the last few strides, and the Greyspear. horse looks certain to win a good stake during the holiday.. Front Rank would have been unlucky had she been beaten yesterday in the Teschemaker Handicap. When nearing the home turn her rider pulled the bit through the filly's mouth, and she was racing over the last two furlongs under difficulties. But for this mishap she would have won decisively. She confirmed the form by winning again to-day. Front Rank does not look like a weight-carrier, but she stays well and further successes may come her way as the season advances.

Set Sail was handicapped as a non-stayer in the Teschemaker Handicap, but the Southland mare' put up a good performance, only failing over the last bit. It looks very unwise now to rate her as a sprinter only, and no surprise need be felt if she wins a good race over a mile and a-cjuarler before very long. The Arrowsmith three-year-old Sagittarius showed a fine turn of speed in the Tycho Handicap at .Washdyke. He is a very smart hack, who will soon be winning good sprint races in good open company. The imported mare Celerity 11. was very unlucky in tho Tycho Handicap yesterday. She was chopped out at the start, losing many lengths, and it was a fine performance that landed her within half a length of Sagittarius at the finish. She showed to-day how unlucky Bhe had been; as she was again one of th 6 last to leave ( .the barrier.. Yet she got up to win decisively. She is a good mare who races in the same interests as Glentruin, and she will be winning in open company before long. The win scored by Assurance at the South Canterbury meeting to-day was the first credited to hi 3 owner, Dr. M. G. Louisson, a popular Christchurch sportsma.n. The' Gay Lad gelding has been a great disappointment in the past. He can gallop on tho tracks, but he has consistently refused to repeat in public. He won this race handsomely, and it will be pleasing if ho and other horses win again for Dr. Louisson, for whom R. Emerson trains. The Southland two-year-old Zelanian ran a creditable race in the. Spring Stakes at Washdyke. He is by Kilbroney from Zia, but he is a different looking customer from his half-sister Script, being a very big gelding. He looks as if he needed time, but he should make a really good performer next season.

Dubious, the winner of the Otaio Hurdle Handicap at the South Canterbury meetimir yesterday, was .purchased in August by the Pleasant Point sportsman, Mr. H. Neiligan. He ran prominently for his new owner in the Sydenham Hurdles on the last day of the Grand National meeting, but yesterday's race marked his first win under Mr. Nelligan's colour;?. Dubious is a wellbred gelding, being. a half-brother to two New Zealand Cup winners, Noctuiform and night Sun. He is a good jumper and with average luck he will win hurdle races this season in muoh higher company.
