MISADVENTURE TO HULK.

MONOWAI ESCAPES SINKING. STRENUOUS NIGHT SPENT. [BV TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] GISBORNE, Saturday. The hulk Monowai narrowly escaped premature sinking last night through the destruction of a seacock and the holing of the vessel caused by a plate which was accidentally dropped from ,above. Assistance was secured from the shore and the hole was blocked after several hours' work. This morning the hulk was in no danger. Had the accident necessitated beaching the Monowai under the conditions which ruled in the bay last night, it is likely she would have remained high and dry and that the plans for the harbour construction would have been seriously interfered with. The tug Pelican was despatched with a gang of men to assist those already on the hulk. They took tarpaulins and other gear, including a pump, and a toilsome night was spent endeavouring to prevent the inflow of water. Temporary repairs were effected and these will oe consolidated during the next few days. The launch Takimu was despatched to stand by the Monowai in case of any sudden "development. Those on boar 3 the launch were exposed to a severe buffeting from the very heavy seas which rolled into the bay all through the night. j
