THEFT FROM WAREHOUSE.
CONVICTION OF TWO MEN. ADMITTED JO PROBATION. [BY TELECmtSSt™own correspondent. ] DUNEDIN, Friday. In the Police Court this morning Sid-, ney Hastie was charged with having, between May 25 and November 25 last, stolen goods valued at £l9, the property of Briscoe and Company, Limited. Accused pleaded guilty. In connection with this charge Alex Hutton was charged with having received goods valued at £ll 6s, knowing the same to have been dishonestly obtained He pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Lewis said Hastie, who is married and has eight children, had been employed by Briscoe's as a packer for the past" ten years. Hutton had approached him and said that if he could do anything for hiim he would be pleased. Hastie gave him some white lead for Hutton's brother, and Hutton got into the habit of going for other goods. Both men had admitted everything. Hutton, who was a carrier, said he paid for everything he get. That was so, but he did not pay anything near the value of the goods he received He paid Hastie £1 for a lawnmower and sold it for £2 ss, its real value being £4. The man who purchased ii; would have to pay the difference ,All (the goods had been recovered. The accused vrere convicted and admitted to probation for two years. Each was ordered to pay £1 12s 6d to Briscoe and Company in connection with the lawnmower that had been disposed of.
