BRIXTON ROAD CARNIVAL.
' ♦— l 1,1 " mmmm Q. MONEY FOR SCHOOL GROUNDS SUCCESSFUL "PADDY'S MARKET." An animated scene was presented a.t Dominion Road terminus yesterday, when a "Paddy's Market" was held in aid of the Brixton Road School queen carnival. A number of stalls erected on tho footpath of Balmoral Road, adjacent to Potter's Park, did excellent business, and in most casc3 stocks had to be replenished to satisfy the demand. -In introducing the Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. E. H. Potter, who opened the fah, Mr. A. W. Brockie, chairman of the carnival committee, outlined the history of the school. At the opening ceremony on Juno 4 last the Minister of Education, tho Hon. R.. A. Wright, intimated tho department had no money available for improving the grounds. This prompted the residents to organise a carnival to raise funds, and last Tuesday, at the conclusion of tho first portion of the competition, there was about £3OO in hand. The school queen would be chosen on December 15, by which time it was hoped that more than £SOO would have been raised. If the department allowed the usual £ for £ subsidy the committee would realise its objective of £IOOO. The carnival committee, although working by permission of tho Edondale School Committee, is an independent body set up by residents of the school district The response to its appeal for funds shows the interest taken in school matters.
