SLEEPY FIRE BRIGADE.
TOWN'S STRANGE PROBLEM. MEN WHO WILL NOT WAKE, The town of Cullompton, in Devonshire, is faced with the problem of how to wake up the members of the fire brigade when they are required. The question was debated at length by the local council at a recent meeting. It was decided that maroons should be used. The first time the maroons were discharged, however, there was trouble. One inhabitant fainted, another had to consult a doctor, and many complained of shock. This method was abandoned, and resort was had to the steam hooter at the tannery. It was then found that there was not always a sufficient head of steam to sound this hooter, so the councillors were compelled, to cast about for some other means of signalling. Finally, ifc was decided that the best expedient would be a shrill blast on a I whistle. When this was tried the mem- I bers of the brigade failed to respond in sufficient numbers, attributing the whistle either to a traffic signal or the efforts of a boy. The problem remains unsolved.
