An interesting statement of the approximate yield on market prices of bank shares was given recently by the City editor of the Times, who remarked that the market for such shares is one in which there is a very regular flow of business, and prices are free from those wild fluctuations which mark the more speculative departments where business is either very active or very quiet. Bank shares are essentially investments, and since the introduction of shares with no uncalled liability their popularity with investors has grown. The yields on bank shares range from about 5 per cent, in the case of the "Big Five" to nearly 7 per cent, in the case of banks operating m'ainly overseas. The detailed list, showing the approximate yield without accrued interest on prices ruling at the beginning of October, is as follows: Yield Per Cent. £ a. d. Tropical heat during nearly three months has tended to cause poor prospects in the Douro port producing districts, says the Oporto correspondent of the Daily Mail. The vines have been unable to resist the excessive drought, consequently the grapes have dried up and it is estimated that more than onethird of the produce has been lost. Prices will inevitably, be high for all qualities, the general tendency being to harden. It is 50 years since such sustained heat has been experienced. LONDON'S MEAT SUPPLYFIGURES FOR NINE MONTHS.
