MAYOR'S RESIGNATION.
WORK DONE FOR BOROUGH. PAYMENT AFTER ELECTION. AUDITOR-GENERAL'S LETTER. [by telegraph.—press association,] TIMAKU. Monday. Arising out of the tact that Mr. G. J. Wallace, Mayor of Timaru, did engineering work for the Borough Council nine months before b& became a member of the council and the account for which, £l9, wab paid after he became Mayor and had sold his business, the AuditorGeneral wrote suggesting that Mr. Wallace should refrain, from exercising the Junction of Mayor or councillor until such time as he had been re-elected. The Auditor-General added that in this case no further action on the part of the Audit Department would be necessary. A formal resignation would facilitate adjustment of the position. At a special meeting of the Borough Council to-night Mr. Wallace resigned, and the council adjourned until next Thursday night for the purpose of electing a Mayor.
