THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE. [BX • TELEGRAM. —OWN COEE.ESPONDjSXf } WELLINGTON, Monday. The annual conference of, the New Zealand Typographical . Federation was opened to-day. Representatives were present from the Auckland, Wellington, Otago and Southland Typographical Unions. v: . The president, Mr. R. H. Stickney,. >aid it would be the purpose of the conerence to draft claims for a new award. A number of matters relating to award proposals would come up for consideration, including the vexed question as to what constituted a probationer on a composing machine. He hoped that a clear and effective definition of a linotype probationer would be arrived at, which would leave no doubt in the mi ids of those concerned in the matter. He said the federation had been in cojpmunication with ill English-speaking typographical unions for the purpose of placing the New Z&siand awsrd rates before their members so that possible visitors would be under no misapprehension as to the real position. ' . Alluding to the industrial position, Mr. Vney said that printers needed no homilies from the president of the Employers' Federation as to what was best for, the economic well-being. The sug--jestion of the Hon. Shailer Weston that there should be a five years' truce on the question of wages could not be taken seriously.
