BRIXTON ROAD SCHOOL.

IMPROVEMENT OF GROUNDS. QUEEN CARNIVAL PROPOSED. The question of improvement of tha grounds at Brixton Road School, opened last April t was discussed at a public meeting of householders on Tuesday evening. The school enjoys the distinction of being the first school opened by the Eon. R. A. Wright as Minister of Education, and the function marked his first public engagement in Auckland. Mr. J. Carrie, chairman of the Edendale School Committee, under whose jurisdiction the Brixton Eoad School comes, presided over an at. tendanco of about 40. Mr. A. Erockia, representing the BrLitcn Eoad interests on the 6chool committee, outlined the needs of the JchooL Playing areas, especially for the infants, were badly needed, seating accommodation in the open was an urgent necessity, and alto, gether £IOOO to £ISOO might very well be spent on the school and grounds. From recent utterances of the Minister it appeared hopeless to expect the Education Department to expend any money at the present time, indeed, they were being told almost daily the education cupboard was bare. The headmaster, Mr, P. J. Hook, said he thought that if a queen carnival could be organised successfully the money might be forthcoming. He instanced the recent effort at Bayfield School, where £I4OO had been raised. A Voice: That is a wealthy district, though. One or two ladies spoke in support of the project, and it was finally resolired, on the motion of Mr. George Ashley, to organise a carnival to be known as the Brixton Road School Christmas Queen Carnival. A committee of 16, with power to add to their number, was formed and Mr. A. Paull was unanimously elected secretary and treasurer of the fund. An oSer by Mr. Mulvihill to execute any printing required up to the sum of £lO wag accepted with thanks.
