GOVERNOR OF SUDAN.

SIR J. MAFFEY APPOINTED. Sun. LONDON, Oct. 25. Sir John Maffey has b§en appointed Governor-General of the Sudan. Sir John Loader Maffey was born in 1877. He was educated at Rugby and Oxford University, and joined the Indian Civil Service iri 1899. In 1905 he was transferred to the Political Department, and from 1909 to 1912 was Political Agent at Khyber. He was DeputyCommissioner at Peshawar from 1914 to 1915, and Deputy-Secretary in the Foreign and Political Department, Government of India, in the year 1915-16. In 1919 Sir John was chief political officer in Afghanistan, and in 1921 was Chief Secretary to the Duko of Connaught. From 1921 to 1924 ho filled the post of chief commissioner of the Northwest Frontier Province, India.
