HAURAKI DRAINAGE.
THE ORCHARD EAST AREA. .SETTLERS SUBMIT SCHEME. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, Tuesday. The Hatiraki Drainage Board mot yesterday, the chairman, Mr. G. Gray, presiding. The Land Drainage Department advised that tho cosi of improvement to certain stopbanks w.» estimated at £10(X). When the board completed the necessary arrangements levels would be taken and plans aud specifications prepared. Messrs. J. A. Bennett, A. J. Heasereari and J. A. Hamilton, on behalf of settlers in tho Orchard East and Huirau Road district, submitted a local drainage scheme as a counter proposal to one submitted by the board. The settlers were willing to form a special rating area to raise £IOOO, the estimated cost of the improvements. The petition supporting the request contained 19 signatures. It was menrioned that, in the event of the cost oi the scheme exceding the estimate a subsidy of £450 was available. The proposals had been submitted to tho Horahia Board and had received favourable consideration. The scheme was dependent for its success on the favourable acceptance of both boards. A complication had been caused by a change ot' attitude on the part of the Huirau Point settlers, but this would not seriously prejudice the proposals. Ths deputation was given an assurance that the proposals would be discussed with the Horahia Board, the deputation in the meantime to submit an amended proposal to the Huirau settlers calculated to drain efficiently a wider area. Hie board resolved to obtain an estimate of the cost of the main features of the proposals, after which the petition would he discussed with the Horahia Board. ELECTION OF THE BOARD.
