TESTS OF GOLFERS.

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. TOURNAMENT OPENS TO-DAY. FORM OF THE LEADING PLAYERS. [BV TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON. Thursday. The New Zealand golf championship meeting will open on tho Miramar links tomorrow. The course was crowded up to one o'clock to-day when play was finished for the day. The course was then closed in order to give the authorities and the working staff a chance to cope with the quicklygrowing grass and the other final preparations. The weather was good to-day for scoring, but not very many good rounds have been reported. - One hears nothing but praise for the course. "These greens are. too good for me," said a well-known golfer from further North. Praise has been expressed ou every side. Hector Morrison, tho New South Wales amateur champion, is said to be the only formidable Australian, and he is really a first-class golfer. Although not in his best form he had a 76 yesterday in trying conditions. To-day the amateurs Dr. Ross and Horton finished two down to the professionals, Moss and Sliaw. Moss and Ross were approximately 73 and 77 respectively, although the Auckland professional finished with a seven. The favourites for the open are Macintosh and Moss, and both are playing well. The style of the latter is much admired. Tho young amateur, Wright, of Timaru, had approximately a 74, and several other amateurs were under 80. Estimates as to what aggregate should win the open vary considerably. A leading professional says that four 78's will win, while others say four 76's. If tho weather is favourable it should be the latter figure. To-morrow and on Saturday 32 amateurs will qualify for the match play next week. The general opinion is that an average of 85's should get in at' tho tail end of the 32. THE AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS. PARTY TO VISIT AUCKLAND. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Thursday. Advice has been received that the party of about six .Australian golfers now in Wellington for the New Zealand championship meeting will arrive in Hamilton in about a fortnight, after visiting Rotorua.
