AUCKLAND CH AiMPI ONSH IP. M. D. WHITE WINS THE' FINAL. Play in the Auckland amateur billiards championship was concluded on Saturday evening, when M. D. White defeated E. V. Roberts. The winner will hold the Billiards, Limited Shield for one year. The final session attracted a large gathering at tli* showrooms of Billiards, Ltd. The scores kt the end of the previous session were:—White. 502, in play: Roberts, 485. The former carried on from 12 unfinished to 49 before failing. Roberts replying with a break of 26.at his first visit. White forced the pace and two cues later compiled n break of 40. He continued to play attractively and before Roberts could get going made four runs of over 20 and one over 30. thus establishing a lead of over 200 points. Roberts, however, rallied and in quick time added breaks of 23, 48. 30 and 45 to his total, reducing his opponent's lead con siderably. . White continued to play a forcing game and soon added breaks of 39 and 38. Almost immediately afterwards he added a well-played all-round break of 52. Roberts was in a hopeless position as far c.s the scores were concerned. but rallied again and ran up a 24 before failing. This proved to be his last chance, as White then ran to points. The final scores were:—White. 1000: Roberts, 814.
The best breaks were as follow: —White: 49, 40. 20. 20. 23. 22. 37. 39. 38 and 52 (average. 11.9 for final session and 10.1 for whole game). . Roberts,: 26; 23, 48: 30,' 45 and 24.
White fully deserved his win. He was remarkably consistent throughout the two sessions and should give a good account of hirnelf in the New Zealand, championships. Roberts, after his good display in the first session, gave "a disappointing exhibition. but throughout played with determination. ' * On behalf of Billiards. Limited. Mr. C. Cummins congratulated Mr. Whit® on l\is win and presented him with the Billiards, Limited, Shield, which he will hold for one year, also a gold medal for the Auckland provincial championship. The runnerup. Mr. Roberts, was presented with + he set of balls used in the tournament. The orize for tb« highest break was won by Mr. E. W. WarTpn, with a break of 87. Both Messrs. M. D. White and E. V. -Roberts eulogised the excellent-, table r>"d conditions under which the championship was played. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. ANNOUNCEMENT OF DRAW. The opening games in the New Zealand amateur billiard championship will be commenced to-day in the rooms of the Auckland Sports Club, His Majesty's Arcade. W. Rae and A. Smith will play their game at 2.30. and in the evening at 7.30, H. F. Valentine and H. A. Massie will meet. The draw for the first and second rounds is as follows: First Round.—To-day at 2.30: W. Rae v. A. Smith, Second Round.—This evening at 7.30: H. F. Valentine v. H. A. Massie; Tuesday, at 2.30. A. B. Joplin v. W. E. Hackett; at 7.30, C. Mason (title holder) v. E. W. Warren. Wednesday, at 2.30, F. Keefe v. K. Tate; at 7.30, E. Stewart v. E. .T. Morrison. Thursday, at 2.30, E. V. Roberts v. Rae or Smith: at 7.30, F. B. Lovelock v. H. G. Sidebers. Friday, at 2.30, R. Fredatovich v. M. D. White. The arrival of Messrs. Mason Hast year's winner), E. Stewart and H. Siedeberg from Dunedin to play in the tournament lias created a great deal of interest, and as all these players are said to be in good form interesting contests may confidently be looked for. The management request patrons to be seated prior to the commencement of the games, so that the players may not be inconvenienced.
