HIDES AND CALFSKINS.

THE OVERSEAS MARKETS. The overseas liide market continues to be fairly steady, but the outlook is uncertain, according to advices received hy an Auckland firm of exporters. Sonne United Kingdom dealers are taking an optimistic view, and are inclined to pay higher prices than have been ruling for some months, whereas buying houses operating directly in tanners' interests are taking a steadier view of market prospects and are not inclined to advance their limits in anticipation of any improvement in the market in the near future.

Cablegrams received this week advise that the calfskin market both in America and Europe is weak and that a decline lias been registered in light-weights. They also stated that extra light-weight cullskins are unsaleable. The New Zeala.nd calfskin season has just commenced, s.nd as 85 per cent, of New Zealand's output is classed as light, this news of a break in the market, coming at a time when very low prices are being paid, is extremely disconcerting. The reason why calfskins are fetching low prices is that the leather produced from them is a good deal out of favour. As far as the United States is concerned, patent leather is the principal upper leather being cut for women's shoes, followed by kids and then calf. It is predicted that black leathers are now beginning to experience a return of their old popularity, and this may represent an opportunity for calfskins to be turned into black suedes. CANTERBURY MARKETS, - . LOW PRICE OF POTATOES. ••• *- V - [BY TELEGRArH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] • CHEISTCHUECH, Friday. The value of potatoes has touched practically the lowest point of the year. Coastal business has been dono at £5 f.o.b. for this month. The depressing influence. is tho quantity of tubers in stock at ports which is preventing Northern operators from coming on the market. Just sufficient shipments have been-going North to meet the demand, and with the knowledge of the accumulations at northern port-3 there is no incentive for the ordinary order business. It is reported that a fair quantity is being rebagged for the next Sydney boat on August 26, and that so far a few fresh arrivals from the country are taking their place. ' The; only firm element in the present position is the.grower, who is not a seller at the nominal value of £3 15s a ton on trucks.' The interesting possibility is that with; so many paper potatoes, being' thrown cn the market actual stuff to cover may be securely held by the grower. The next Auckland boat is due to sail at the beginning of the week. The Sydney boatj \Voikouaiti, on August 26, is expected to take a smaller consignment than the Waihora.
