There is some activity in chartering steamers for the Australian "wheat trade,, Several fixtures have been made at from 40s to 40s 6d for. shipments from West Australia, and 43s 9d from South Australia, Victoria and" New South Wales, with 44s 6d for a motor steamer. It is expected that the rates will harden as' the amount, of: tonnage available is limited owing to the large .-number-of steamers, still employed in the coal trade. Some owners of tramp steamers say it will not pay them to send steamers, in ballast to Australia unless they get at least 455. It has been authoritatively, stated that a new company is about to open a coal mine at Kamo, The mine will be on the Ruatangata side of Kamo and preparations are sufficiently forward to enable the promoters to say: that they expect to have coal ready for the market by the beginning of October. * BUTTER AND CHEESE. Choicest New Zealand salted and unsalted are selling at 172s to 1745; Australian, 166s to 168s; exceptionally good, 170s; Danish, 178s. ■ ' ' The cheese market is steady. New Zealand white, is quoted at 87s to 88s and coloured at 85s. Last %veek's report stated:—The but-, ter market is quiet but firm! New Zealand choicest, salted and unsalted, is quoted at 1745, exceptionally choice, 176s ; Australian, salted, 168s'to-'l7os; unsalted, 1725; Danish, 1765. Cheese is firm. New coloured, ,86s; white, 90s. No Australian is on offer. MELBOURNE PRODUCE PRICES. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Aug. 20. The following are to-day's quotations on the Melbourne produce market:— Wheat.—Quiet; 6s ll^d. Oats.—Milling, 3s 6d to 3s 8d; feed, 3s 2d to 3s 3d: Barley.—English, 4s 6d; Cape, 4s 3d.
