MAIN TRUNK EXPRESSES.
LATE ARRIVAL IN CITY. EFFECT OF THE DERAILMENT. The work of removing the carriages of •the limited express derailed north of Johnsonville on. Tuesday evening delayed the arrival in Auckland yesterday of the ordinary and limited expresses from Wellington. The carriages were removed from the cutting at 9.30 on Wednesday evening. Passengers by the ordinary express, which left Wellington at a quarter to one on Wednesday afternoon, had to tranship to another train at the scene of the derailment, and in consequence the train, which should have reached Auckland at 6.41 a.m. yesterday, did not arrive until 8.51 a.m. The limited express was two hours late in leaving Wellington. It was further delayed at crossings on the way north, and did not arrive until one o'clock yesterday afternoon, three and ahalf hours late. Appreciation of the prompt action taken by the driver and fireman to bring the express to a standstill when the accident occurred is expressed in a testimonial signed by about 60 passengers on the derailed train.. A tribute is also paid to the kindness and consideration of the guard who made it his first duty to see to the safety of the passengers.
