LIGHTERS FOR NAURU.

TEN UNDER CONSTRUCTION. AUCKLAND FIRM'S CONTRACT. 'An order for the supply of ten lighters to handle phosphates at Nauru and Ocean Islands is being executed by Messrs. Bailey and Lowe, of Auckland, for the British Phosphate Commission. Tenders ■were received from all parts of New Zealand and, Australia., Sever,al of the lighters have already been completed and it is expected that' all will be finished by the end of October. They are being built in two sizes, four large ones being for v/ork at .Nauru Island, and the other six, somewhat smaller, for Ocean Island. All are extremely strongly built, in order to withstand the buffeting they are j likely to receive among the reefs. . The larger lighters are 30ft. in length, Bft. 2in.- in beam and 3ft. 6in. in depth. The measurements of the smaller craft are length, 28ft.; beam, 7ft. 6in.; and depth, 3ft. There are no harbours at Nauru and Ocean Islands and the steamers have to load in open roadsteads. The lighters are loaded at a cantilever wharf ana are then toweel by launches, out to the steamers where the phosphates are transferred.
