POLICE ASKED TO. INQUIRE

Complaint that the unemployed posi-tion-is being exploited by some persons who specialise'in the selling of goods by house-to-house canvassing was made at the meeting'bf the Auckland Unemployed Relief Committee yesterday. The attention of the police is to be drawn to one particular case.

A sample of qoods to be sold'and of card? supplied to the canvassers was be-fore^;-the committee. The card was headed *'unemployment" large -letters, and contained an appeal to householders to purchase t h w.ar es. elite fly on this ground of fie relief that, would bo afforded the canvasser, whoso genuineness was testifledfto by the fact that ho had undertaken such arduous work as canvassing. "One for tho carivassei' and three for himself," suggested a member of the committee when the card was read; It,"was stated that men were induced to apply for the positions of canvassers of such goods on - the representation that lucrative employment was offering. .Mr. T. Lamont said that a few days ago & man was canvassing in Devonport with a household preparation and was using an unemployed appeal card. He thought the public should be warned agaifist such tactics. The people responsible were exploiting, the committee and the unemployed. Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of the Auckland office of the Labour Department, said it was very difficult for people to refuse to buy the goods when such cards were-placed before them. Unemployment was being used as a catch phra'se. It was decided to ask the police to make inquiries with a view to putting a stop to the practice. •
