ARISTOCRATIC PETS.
ANNUAL GAT AND DQG SHOW. OVER ONE HUNDRED EXHIBITS. DETAILS OF THE AWARDS. Basking on sumptuous cushions, beneath canopies of silk and velvet, Auckland's cat-and-dog aristocracy paroled its beauties and charms yesterday at the fifth annual show of the Auckland Toy Dog Club, held in the Newmarket Municipal Hall.
Here were the blue-bloods of cainne and feline society, noble Persians and' Chinchillas of incredible size and weight, French poodles that looked like woolly lambs with dog faces and shaven legs, snub-nosed Pekingese, proud Poms and a tiny parody of a dog, hardly bigger than a good-sized rat, that pranced round with a diamond collar round his neck. Some of these proud creatures had family trees that went back for many generations, and the names that brightened the pages of the catalogue, Sunbright Jewel, Saucy Girl, the Sheik, Prince Zev and Red-Hotte-Boy, would have done credit to any equine stud' book. The rearing of these super-cats and miniature dogs is evidently becoming a popular hobby in Auckland, for there were no fewer than 125 animals on exhibition, as compared with 61 at the last show. The display was well staged, and the offer of a prize for the best-decorated cage was responsible for some truly novel effects. One of the cages was fashioned as a pagoda, and there was also a little white and gold temple. Another cage was curtained with luxurious pink silk hangings, and a tiny rose-shaded electric bulb cast an alluring beam on the pampered pet reposing on a white lambswool cushion. As some of the animals were stated to be worth nearly £.IOO, however, the owners no doubt felt the obligation of maintaining the dignity of their pets' proud lineage and position. Tho best cat in the show was Mr. Jones' Prince Leo, a truly noble blue Persian. The judging proved a long and arduous task, in view of the large number of entries, and will not be completed until this morning. Mr. A. W. H. Pascoe is judging the dogs and Mrs. F. M. Harp the cats. The show will be open to-day and will close this evening. Yesterday's awards are as follows: POMERANIANS (7LB. AND OVER).
