GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
THE CONCRETING PROPOSALS QUESTION : OF COMPENSATION. ATTITUDE OF ROAD BOARD. " If this board is going to bo involved in big claims we will have to reconsider the whole matter, we have not the money and that is all there is to it," said Mr. R. G. Clark, chairman of the One Tree Hill Road Board, in discussing the concreting of 127 chains of the Great South Road, sanctioned by ratepayers at a recent poll, at a meeting of the board last evening. " I have heard murmurs about compensation claims, but I would like to make it quite clear that the board will not be harnessed by claims," Mr. Clark said. "If the ratepayers are not going to meet us in good spirit we will have to take other means. When the Manukau Road was concreted we had the ratepayers with us in spirit. The board is prepared to deal fairly with cases. To safeguard the board we are going to take measures to prevent dissatisfaction." Mr. John Dawson, the board's engineer, asked if the board was prepared to adJust gateposts and paths. 'Mr. Clark: Within reason, yes. If there are likely to be big claims we will have to amend the plans. A Member: There was a recent Court case in which compensation was refused. Mr. Clark: Oh, yes, I know that, but we do not want to go to Court over the matter. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans for the work and submit them to the board. He was further instructed to get in touch with ratepayers to obtain fheir point of view before levels were made.
