RECOVERY OF PLATINUM.
TESTING OF NEW MACHINE. TO BE UNDERTAKEN AT THAMES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES, Wednesday. A letter concerning a new machine for the recovery of platinum was received from Mr. A. H. Kimbell, under-Secretary to the Mines Department, at the last meeting of the council of the Thames School of Mines. The letter stated that Mr. H. W. Giesen, of Dannevirke, had interviewed the Minister of Mines in connection with the testing, at the Thames School of Mines, of a machine which, it was hoped, would recover a greater quantity of platinum than any other. The Minister was anxious that the tests be carried out at Thames. Platinum sands from one of the Southland beaches would be forwarded, along with the machine. The president, Mr. T. W. Rhodes, said he considered the request a compliment to the Thames School, which was now being made use of by people in ail parts of the Dominion. It was resolved to give every facility for testing the new machine as requested.
