FALSE LETTER WRITTEN.

OFFENCE BY ENGINEER. MEANS TO OBTAIN MONEY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON. Wedneoday. An engineer, Percy Cashman, aged 35 years appeared in tho Magistrate's Court to-day to answer a charge of writing a false letter to Mrs. Annie Stokes. In evidenco Mrs. Stokes said she and Mrs. Bushett kept a fruiterer's shop in Riddiford Street. Cashman came to her shop with a letter purporting to be from Mr. McGrath, of Eastbourne, asking witness or Mrs. Bushett to pay tho bearer £2 10s. " I told him Mrs. Bushett was out and that I could do nothing until sho returned," said the witness. "Ho camo back at 8.30 in the evening, but Mrs. Bushett had not arrived home then . and I told him to call back at 9 o'clock which he did. I got £2 from my partner and gave it to him, but he said he must have £2 10s. My partner then got 10s and gave it to him." Cashman told her that the money was for Mr. McGrath who wanted to settle a little account he had run up in town. Replying to a question from Mr, J. F. R. Wallace, who appeared for accused, witness said she did not owe Mr. McGrath any money and had never had any such orders from him before. Thomas McGrath, a settler, said that accused, whom he had known as Melntyre, had stayed with him at Eastbourne for eight or nine days. Ho had not written any letter to Mrs. Stokes or Mrs. Bushett, nor did ho authorise accused to writ® a letter.

Accused pleaded guilty and wr-. committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence.
